Why do we say America is number 1?

Nothing wrong with being proud of your country. Never heard a Frenchman or a Englishman chanting we're number two in reference to their country. And RE: Vietnam, we didnt lose, we left. Even the N. Vietnamese commander admits that their forces were completely beaten at the end of the war. Our politicians just pulled us out and let ARVN get whomped and ran over.
