I have just broke if off with this guy that I have been dating?

for 2 1/2 months, I feel like he makes no effort to see me, he works nights during the week and I work during the day, so we only have one night to see each other on the weekends, I feel like I have to nag him to see him, twice we went with out seeing each other on weekend and that is fine, but last night he just wanted to stay in and I can't go to his house because he lives with his parents and he doesn't want to introduce anyone to them until he is engaged, which I respect, but next weekend he might go upstate with his parents, so that would be two weekends I won't see him, so he told me he can't promise me he would come over and then just never called me, so I went and met my friend for a few drinks and I text him this is not what I want, I don't want to date you anymore, I do want to date him, but he puts no effort in, should I call him to explain why I text him that or should I just leave it as I broke it off to him via text???
