Reconstruction after the Civil War question!?!?

Many wanted confederate leaders to be hung. But it never happened, manily because of the surrender agreement that ended the war. Really the union wasn't restored until the spanish american war (and even then you could debate various other dates) where both sides came together. the north and south were still bitter and the south took it out on freed slaves. (even though the union army was propping up southern governments)
